Random ID Generator
Generate short random IDs for database records, URLs and internal references. More readable than UUIDs but still unique.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a UUID?
UUIDs are 36 characters including hyphens. Short random IDs (10–16 chars) are more compact for URLs and display, while still offering excellent uniqueness guarantees.
Are these IDs safe to use as database primary keys?
Yes for most applications. A 10-character alphanumeric ID gives ~60 bits of entropy — collision probability is negligible for databases under tens of millions of rows. Use UUIDs if you need guaranteed global uniqueness across distributed systems.
Can I use these IDs in URLs?
Yes — use only uppercase letters and digits (no symbols) and the IDs will be URL-safe. Avoid ambiguous characters (enable Exclude Ambiguous) to make IDs easier to share verbally.
